Inspiration
Why Dr. Michael West Is Our Inspiration
Dr. Michael West (1888–1973) was a visionary educationist and applied linguist whose contributions to English Language Teaching (ELT) in South Asia, particularly in Bengal, continue to resonate today. As an educational advisor to the Government of Bengal during the British colonial period, Dr. West developed groundbreaking approaches to English language instruction, emphasizing reading as the core skill for second-language learners. He introduced the “Reader Method”, a vocabulary-controlled system designed to make English more accessible to non-native speakers. His works, including the New Method Readers and The Teaching of English in India, have profoundly shaped the foundation of ELT in the region.
Dr. West believed in making English education practical, engaging, and culturally sensitive. His principles—learner-centered instruction, vocabulary control, teacher training, and textbook reform—align deeply with our mission at the Study Centre. By naming our Centre after Dr. Michael West, we honor his enduring legacy and reaffirm our commitment to his core values: accessibility, practicality, and excellence in English education for all.
