Michael West Study Centre

Established on 11 February 2024, inaugurated by Professor Dr. Richard Smith (University of Warwick, UK), the Centre is a hub for advancing English Language Education in Bangladesh through the legacy of Dr. Michael West. It is located at Govt. Teachers' Training College, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

About Dr. Michael West

Michael Philip West (1888–1973) was a prominent educationist & former Principal of Govt. Teachers’ Training college, Dhaka. He developed many original insights into problems of teaching English in difficult circumstances and became a prolific writer of textbooks for Longmans, Green during the late 1920s and 1930s in order to develop reading skills of the students of the sub-continent. At the end of 1920, Michael West was appointed the Principal of Teachers’ Training College, Dhaka and continued his service till 1932. Through research, he developed a reading method which was widely accepted that time and his ideas are relevant even today. He authored Bilingualism (1926a) and Teaching English in Difficult Circumstances (1960) which were seminal in the field of ELT and Applied Linguistics. The New Method series of textbooks by him continued to get published from 1926 onwards. Under the able leadership of Michael West, the college rapidly grew into eminence, becoming the most widely known teacher training college in the sub-continent.
